Humboldt Park Library and Reading Room

A 1,400-volume perimeter library in quarter-sawn white oak, with radiator airflow routed through the casework and knurled brass hardware turned in the shop.

The brief

A 1912 parlor that would not take stock cabinetry.

The client needed housing for 1,400 rare volumes in a historic parlor with original horsehair plaster and a cast-iron steam radiator sitting in the main south window bay.

Plaster walls well out of plumb

Laser scans put the north wall 1.85 inches off plumb over a 12-foot height. Pre-built millwork would have left gaps or needed quarter-round trim to hide them.

Radiator heat with nowhere to go

Boxing in the radiator without an engineered chimney would have warped solid shelves and baked antique spines. The airflow had to work without visible plastic louvers.

A 29-inch door at the top of a dogleg stair

Every vertical upright ran past 10 feet, and the second-floor parlor could only be reached through a narrow stairwell turn.

Engineering

Shop drawings that solved the install before the timber was cut.

Every component was drawn at 1:1 in joinery cross-section. Custom mechanical mortises let the uprights come together on site with hidden cam bolts.

Slatted oak convection grille recessed into the library base cabinet — Sheet M-04 Radiator convection plenum A concealed chimney takes 220°F radiator exhaust out through brass shadow-line reveals, holding shelf surfaces under 72°F.

Field-scribed white oak pilaster fitted against the original plaster wall — Sheet M-08 Scribed pilaster tolerances Side panels contoured to CNC reference points, tracking the irregular 1912 plaster curve to within half a millimetre.

Outcome

Four days on site. No field alterations.

Because the joinery and the scribe geometry were verified in CAD before anything was cut in Pilsen, the whole 22-foot run went in over four working days with two people. No on-site table saw, so no dust on finished floors.
